Safety Time-Out Called for Construction Sector
In a press release by MOM, a Safety Time-Out (STO) for the Construction sector has been announced.
The STO are strongly encouraged to run from 8 November 2024 to 22 November 2024.
This move comes after a worrying trend in the sector.
Between July and October 2024, there were 10 fatal incidents in Construction.
The Multi-Agency Workplace Safety and Health Taskforce (MAST) is behind this initiative.
Why is the STO Needed?
The STO serves as a reminder about safety rules.
It’s especially important as the festive season approaches.
Workers often prepare for home leave during this time.
The recent deaths highlight the need for more safety measures.
STO Focus Areas | Description |
---|---|
Falling Objects | Prevent workers from being hit by things falling from above |
Vehicular Safety | Make sure vehicles at work sites are used safely |
Lifting & Rigging Activities | Ensure safe practices when rigging and lifting heavy items |
What Companies Should Do During STO
Companies are asked to engage in several activities during the STO period.
Senior management should meet with site teams.
They should talk about safety concerns at work.
The focus should be on preventing accidents from falling objects.
They should also look at ways to make vehicle use safer.
Lastly, they need to ensure safe lifting and rigging activities.
Government’s Role in Safety
Public agencies will lead by example during this time.
They will ask their contractors to conduct STOs at worksites.
This shows the government’s commitment to safety.
The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) has increased safety inspections since October 2024.
They are focusing on high-risk sectors, such as Construction.
Enforcement Actions
MOM plans to enforce WSH regulations strictly.
Companies that break rules may face fines.
They might also get Stop-Work orders.
In serious cases, there could be legal penalties.
According to MOM, “MOM will press on with our enforcement efforts to deter complacency and ensure compliance with WSH regulations.”
Importance of Workplace Safety
Workplace safety is everyone’s job.
It needs strong ownership to keep standards high.
As MOM states, “WSH is a collective responsibility, and sustaining a culture of WSH excellence requires strong ownership to ensure safety standards are upkept.”
This applies to all levels, from bosses to workers.
Everyone must play their part in workplace safety.
