A part of Marina Bay – The Float, as it is currently known – is set for a dramatic transformation, as revealed by the Ministry of National Development and MINDEF, in a move guaranteed to pique the interest of Singapore’s residents and regular visitors alike.
The Birth of a National Square
Given a renewed lease on life, The Float Marina Bay will be reimagined and resurrected as NS Square.
Not just an architectural symbol, NS Square will rise to become the heartbeat of the nation.
It is to be our stage for large-scale national and community events such as the National Day Parade, River Hongbao and Marina Bay Singapore Countdown.
Simply put, Marina Bay and its surrounds will more than just witness landmark events; they will embrace a part of our collective identity.
“NS Square will be a unique venue to stage large-scale national and community events such as the National Day Parade, River Hongbao, and the Marina Bay Singapore Countdown,” the press release said.
The New Face of The Float
This is not ‘merely’ about a new construction project in the area, but a new future for this urban space.
“It will further strengthen Marina Bay’s position as a precinct for the public to come together, reflect our local identity, and provide Singaporeans with a sense of belonging,” it also stated.
The new NS Square does not just promise larger seating capacity of approximately 30,000.
It also promises year-round pedestrian connectivity, courtesy of an open waterfront promenade.
A Major Operation in Progress
Plans are good, and plans have indeed been made – all set to kick off construction work in Q3 2023 with an anticipated completion in 2027.
However, residents and visitors can expect some disruptions during this transformative period.
A section of the Marina Promenade, facing The Float Marina Bay, will be temporarily closed to foot traffic.
Not to worry, though, there’s a detour in the works – via Raffles Avenue.
But who’s the captain of this ship?
The construction tender has been awarded to Expand Construction Pte Ltd.
With a strong track record in marine works across Marina Bay, including past projects such as Marina Bay Waterfront Promenade and Esplanade Waterfront Theatre, they have proven to be the right fit for this arduous journey.

The Tender Evaluation Panel was impressed by Expand Construction’s submission.
“A Tender Evaluation Panel assessed that the submission by Expand Construction Pte Ltd best meets the construction requirement. They have a strong record in marine works around Marina Bay,” they noted.
Not without competition, the battle for the contract indeed saw thirteen submissions from six companies.
The victor emerged – Expand Construction Pte Ltd stood out, scoring on both price and quality fronts.
While the redevelopment signifies a new beginning for the area, it also brings with it a promise of a more engaging community space and a repertoire of refreshing experiences.
